Grievances, is a wonderfully surreal, mesmerizing drama directed by Siddharth Jha, a 23 year old director.
The film is about Brandon, played by Lenny Grossman, who is trying to cope with his son’s leukemia diagnosis. He has to now recoup with his unsavoury past of being an alcoholic. He encounters a kindly stranger, Pete, who he thinks might have an ulterior motive. Brandon also keeps coming across an ominous pamphlet advertising a restaurant that “serves what you deserve”, which leads him to believe that a person from his dubious past is after him.
Grievances is alternately strange, terrifying, and somber. The striking visuals give a sense of the claustrophobic nightmare facing the protagonist. Jha does a good job of creating a universe that Brandon feels is working against him with deft use of symbolism and foreboding supporting characters. The visuals are accompanied by a superb score that is deafeningly eerie.
Grievances premiered at West Texas Film Festival, and has gone on to play at Global Indian Film Festival, Miami Independent Film Festival and Fort Myers Beach International Film Festival. It offers the audience a must see film from a young, upcoming director and we hope there is more to come
